Weekly Recap
NJHS Inducts New Members
The National Junior Honor Society’s induction ceremony for new seventh and eighth grader members was on Nov. 6. NJHS consists of students who maintain an average of 90 or higher in their core classes and a minimum of satisfactory conduct. Members are expected to volunteer a minimum of twenty hours of community service throughout the year.
Seventh grader Hayley Wylie had been looking forward to this moment for weeks.
“It was so much fun to actually live that moment that I’ve been dreaming of from the day that I actually sent in the application,” Wylie said.
NJHS Secretary Priscilla Le said the ceremony reminded new members the purpose of all the NJHS pillars, which are character, citizenship, service, scholarship, and leadership.
“A lot of people think NJHS is just about one of our pillars, which is scholarship, but it means so much more because it also matters about what you do to help your community, teachers and friends,” Le said.
Advanced Theater Takes Fourth at UIL
Advanced theater placed fourth in their UIL competition on Nov. 8. Their show “Unclaimed” is based on the Hartford circus fire of 1944. Although they did not advance to district, they were selected as alternates.
Eighth graders Zenia Nariman and Preet Nagi played siamese twins named Daisy and Violet who finished each other’s sentences. They received an honorable mention award.
“They called our names and everybody started cheering for us,” Nariman said. “And I felt really happy and proud of what I achieved.”
This experience helped them realize the amount of work it takes to communicate as a whole.
Eighth grader Zachary Taylor played Karl, the brother of the lead character, Birdie, played by Emmy Benitez. For Taylor, the most challenging part was the fire scene.
“I was also most proud of the fire scene because the first time we ever did it, it was a horrible mess,” Taylor said. z’Nobody could do it right. We worked on it and came out almost perfect.”
Congratulations to Zenia Nariman and Preet Nagi for winning an honorable mention and Jordan Woodard for winning an All Star Cast award.
