Hello Chargers, welcome to the second season of POMS Weekly News! (said in Chinese)
Hello Chargers, I’m Zenia Nariman and welcome to the first episode of this year’s Palms weekly news. It’s been a busy two weeks. Let’s recap the highlights with Elsa.
Last week, seventh and eighth grade students had the opportunity to join clubs with their language teacher. Once a month, the French, German, and Italian clubs meet, and every other week, the Latin and Chinese clubs meet. In these clubs, students will learn language skills and in Italian, even cooking. If you want to join a club, ask your language teacher.
Congratulations to Presley Gerard, Pin Oak’s 2025 Teacher of the Year. In addition to being our 8C cluster leader and NJHS sponsor, she also serves as a mentor teacher and an HISD leader.
With over 30 unique electives at Pin Oak, our school’s elective catalog continues to expand. This week on Elective Spotlight, we spent time getting to know the students and the teacher, Mr. Gomez.
“It is a very creativity class. You’re always thinking outside the box. And that’s what I’m looking for, to have students inside my class who want to think outside and be creative. When we’re making airplanes, when we’re making cars, we’re making houses or other items that we will include in our elective class.”
“This class is special to me because I get to be creative in my way and I get to have this sort of freedom where I can think outside the box.”
“We’re going to do a small competition in class. Which one can go the furthest distance? Which one can go the fastest? So, we’re going to have a small competition within our classroom. So, who is the best builder? That’s going to be the title — who’s the best builder?”
“I would recommend it to new students because if you have fun creating and building new things, then this would be good for you. It’s just a really fun class.”
“How has this class developed? It’s more organized. It’s more creative now, and we’re looking into changing the name maybe in the future to being called Wings and Wheels and More because we’re doing more than making model airplanes and model cars. We wanted to bring in a little bit of STEM into the class — building apartments, building houses, and having some cool projects. We are now making race cars, something like this right over here.”
Let’s take a look at Pin Oak’s upcoming events with Zeena.
The gifted and talented testing window opens on September 8 and closes on September 19. If you’re interested in getting your GT identification, email Mrs. Catoni.
The Spanish club’s first meeting is also on the 8th from 4:15 to 5:00 p.m. in room C102. Students must be a current Spanish student in order to attend.
On September 10, our football team plays the first game of the year against Black Middle School at Butler Stadium from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Make sure to go support your Chargers.
That’s all for this week, Chargers. See you next time.
