Door Decorating Contest

Video Transcript

Hello Chargers, my name is Sophia Shaftel, and welcome to the Pin Oak Press. I hope you’re having a great day! Let’s jump into the news.

The door decorating contest is an annual competition where teachers decorate their classroom doors with colorful paper, backdrops, and other crafts to make the hallways more festive. The competition started on November 16, and teachers had until December 11 to finalize their designs. Judging will start tomorrow, Friday, December 13.

The contest is divided into four categories: Most Original and Creative, Best Execution of the Theme, Most Holiday Spirit, and Most School Spirit. Teachers will win gift cards if their door wins in any of the four categories. Let’s take a second to showcase the doors from this year’s competition.

The judges for the competition are the six assistant principals and Principal V. Now let’s interview Mr. Gates, one of the judges for the contest.

Mr. Gates: Hey, what’s going on, everybody? My name is Mr. Gates. I am an assistant principal here at Pin Oak Middle School.

When it comes to judging doors, this is no easy task. What we look for here at Pin Oak is what we like to call “TCCC.” That stands for Theme, Culture, Creativity, and most importantly, Charger Pride.

If I were to decorate a door, I’d probably include something interactive—maybe something you could take with you. For example, I might have a bunch of little slips of paper with small memories of great things that have happened at Pin Oak, like “Here’s when we won that game” or “Here’s when this event happened.” Things that make people smile.

We continue the door decorating contest each year because it brings a lot of joy to our faculty and staff. Not only do we see teachers decorating and enjoying themselves, but we also see students pitching in and having fun. The final doors are truly a collaboration between teachers and students.

Thank you, Mr. Gates, for your insight! Now let’s hear from Miss Escamilla, one of the staff members competing in this year’s contest.

Escamilla: Hi, my name is Alicia Escamilla, and I work here in the Pin Oak front office. I’ve been working here for the last six years.

I got the inspiration for my door while I was out shopping one weekend. I found a Nutcracker, and I really loved how it looked. It inspired me to do a Nutcracker-themed door.

I used foam, beads, cardboard, hot glue, paper edging, and ribbon to create it. I wanted the door to reflect who we are as a team. My theme says, “Our team is nuts about learning,” because at Pin Oak, everyone works together to make sure the students have what they need. That was my main objective—to create something that reflects who we are.

It took me about three days to gather all the materials and around six hours to put it all together.

Thank you, Miss Escamilla, for your time and thoughts about this year’s competition. Let’s hope the teachers are prepared and have finished decorating their doors for the judging! That’s it for today, Chargers. See you next time!
