Hello Chargers, and welcome to the Blue Day News. I’m Lila Byrd, and I hope you’re all having a wonderful week. Let’s get to your news!
First, here’s the weather update for this week. The low on Wednesday was 50°, Thursday’s low was 52°, and Friday’s low is 43°. This weekend is going to get colder, so make sure to stay warm.
The Pin Oak Winter Showcase took place on December 10th, featuring 21 performances from cheer, dance, hip-hop, company, and crew. Students spent three months preparing for this event. Miss Cordero led the cheer, company, and dance teams. Cheer performed three dances, the dance group performed four dances, and company performed six. Mr. Leal directed hip-hop and crew. All of the hip-hop classes had six routines, and crew delivered three.
Practices included morning sessions, continued during the day, and extended into after-school hours. This year, the performance was moved to Bellaire High School due to renovations in our gym. A big thank you to all the parents for supporting their children and to Bellaire High School for generously hosting our performance.
Now let’s recap this week’s sports. The eighth-grade girls’ basketball team is underway. The team has won games against Mandarin and Welch but lost one game to Lanier. The season took an unexpected turn when star player Sophia Buffon suffered a serious knee injury during the first game against Mandarin Middle School. Despite a rocky start, the team is showing progress and working to improve.
In an exclusive interview, Coach K shared the challenges the team faced after Sophia’s injury and discussed their strategy for moving forward. Now let’s hear from Sophia and Coach K.
Coach K: Hi, Sophia!
Sophia Buffon: Hi!
Coach K: Before we start talking about your rehab, can you tell us what happened?
Sophia: In our first game, someone fell on me, and my knee popped out of place, but it went back in. I kind of tore some ligaments in between, and my kneecap is really wiggly.
Coach K: Why is your kneecap so wiggly?
Sophia: The thing that holds my kneecap is more flat, so it’s easier for it to move around in my knee.
Coach K: How long were you out?
Sophia: I was out for two or three weeks. This is my third week, so I’m excited to play today!
Coach K: Very exciting! What’s your recovery process like? I know you’re not done yet.
Sophia: I went to physical therapy and got some exercises and stretches to help strengthen my quad and glute muscles. That helps the tendons hold my kneecap better so it’s harder for it to move out of place.
Coach K: How long do you have to keep doing all that?
Sophia: I’m not really sure. I know I have appointments for the next month and a half.
Coach K: What would you say to other athletes to avoid injuries like this?
Sophia: Just keep going, and make sure to stretch and exercise to keep your muscles strong. And if you keep getting hurt like me, don’t give up. Just keep trying to do better.
A big thank you to Coach K and Sophia Buffon for taking the time to do this interview. Wishing you all a great week. Bye, Chargers!
