Coach K Serves Up Insights on Pin Oak Volleyball Champs

Video Transcript

Hello Chargers, welcome to the Pin Oak Press, a student-produced journalism program here at Pin Oak Middle School, HISD’s premier foreign language magnet school. I’m Zeena, and today’s top story is the Student vs. Faculty Volleyball Game, which took place on November 22nd during Team Time.

The Student vs. Faculty game is an annual fundraiser for the athletic department, where our 8th-grade district champion volleyball team faces off against the faculty. Tickets for the event cost $5 per person. Let’s start by hearing from Coach K, the coach of the Pin Oak girls’ volleyball team.

Interviewer: Hello Pin Oak! I’m Emmy Grace Benitez from Pin Oak Press, and today we’re interviewing Coach K.

Interviewer: What contributed to your team’s success this season?
Coach K: I think the girls are all very talented. This is definitely the most talented group of volleyball players I’ve ever had in all my years of coaching.

Interviewer: What are some things your team does well, and what could they improve on?
Coach K: They’re very good at keeping each other positive and staying united as a team on the court. They laugh and support each other, but the biggest area for improvement is communication. Sometimes when they’re under pressure, they stop talking on the court, which we need to work on.

Interviewer: What was the most nerve-wracking game this year?
Coach K: Every year, without a doubt, it’s the game against Lanier. They’re a very good competitor, and our games with them are always very close. This year, we had a tough match with them in a tournament and came up short, but they always give us a great challenge.

Interviewer: Do you enjoy coaching your players and coaching in general?
Coach K: I absolutely love coaching—it’s my favorite part of my job. I used to be an English teacher, and Miss B was amazing to let me transition to PE. I feel like this is where I truly shine. I love seeing the girls in a different environment and helping them grow.

Interviewer: How long have you been coaching?
Coach K: Over 10 years now.

Interviewer: What do you do to keep your players motivated during tough games?
Coach K: That can be challenging, especially against tough teams like Lanier. I try to call timeouts and remind the players to focus on what they’re doing well. I encourage them to let go of the last play, focus on the moment, and take the game one point at a time.

Thank you, Coach K, for your time and insights.

Thank you for tuning in to this edition of Pin Oak Press. A special thanks to our interviewee, Coach K, and everyone who helped bring this story to life. Have a great day, and we’ll see you next time, Chargers!
